invited competition for an office conversion

Client: AXA Winterthur
Status: competition
Project: 2013

The property at Bleicherweg 62 was built in 1978 close to Paradeplatz in Zürich. Through a radical renovation it has the potential be transformed into a contemporary office building.

The sharp-edged building fits naturally into the urban environment of the Enge quarter like a precisely forged piece of jewellery.

Through the structure of the facade a subtle, visual connection to the adjoining building is established. The glazing that wraps around the corners of the building conveys the depth of the plot. On the side of “Bleicherweg”, the fifth floor of the building volume is set back from the road. This volumetric gesture gives the building a sympathetic, vertical urban quality.

Simultaneously it makes reference to the room-height, metal windows on the ground floor, the classical façade structure of the building as well as the attic level.

The newly organised core acts as a spatial connection between a generous staircase and clearly defined office space.

A generous, slightly curved concrete staircase connects the floors with each other. It creates perspectives through the entire vertical depth of the building right up to the set back fifth floor level.
