invited competition for a residential building

1 / 3

Location: 8001 Zürich
Client: Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB
Status: competition
Project: 2013

The building plot D is in the third phase of a planned development beside the main railway station in Zürich. The length of the building is restricted by the railway tracks on one side and the pedestrian area of “Europaallee” on the other.

It is the final building in the “Europaallee” development. To concisely and precisely formulate an architectural connection to the rest of the development requires the incorporation of the strength of the urban space that is then transferred into an inherent whole. The position of the building reacts to the surrounding environment by clearly defined volumetric recesses.

Directly facing the tracks the proposed building is composed of a base, the main building above and a smaller protruding volume closest to the station. The clear façade division and the strict raster refer to the adjacent buildings especially “Sihlpost”, the main post office in Zurich.

The delicate spanning grid structure of the mezzanine facing Europaallee subtly evokes a casual Italian ambience -„Italianità“ whereby passers by can enjoy drinking a coffee and watching the world go by. Simultaneously the concrete cladding elements shine within an urban harmony and pleasantly into the distance.
